Description
Research causes of fires, determine fire protection methods, and design or recommend materials or equipment such as structural components or fire-detection equipment to assist organizations in safeguarding life and property against fire, explosion, and related hazards.
Experience
A minimum of two to four years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. For example, an accountant must complete four years of college and work for several years in accounting to be considered qualified.
Education
Most of these occupations require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not.
Training
Employees in these occupations usually need several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training.
Tasks
- Determines fire causes and methods of fire prevention.
- Designs fire-detection equipment, alarm systems, fire-extinguishing devices and systems, or structural components protection.
- Recommends and advises on use of fire-detection equipment, extinguishing devices, or methods to alleviate conditions conducive to fire.
- Advises and plans for prevention of destruction by fire, wind, water, or other causes of damage.
- Evaluates fire departments and laws and regulations affecting fire prevention or fire safety.
- Organizes and trains personnel to carry out fire-protection programs.
- Conducts research on fire retardants and fire safety of materials and devices to determine cause and methods of fire prevention.
- Studies buildings to evaluate fire-prevention factors, resistance of construction, contents, water supply and delivery, and exits.
