Description
Appraise, edit, and direct safekeeping of permanent records and historically valuable documents. Participate in research activities based on archival materials.
Experience
Extensive skill, knowledge, and experience are needed for these occupations. Many require more than five years of experience. For example, surgeons must complete four years of college and an additional five to seven years of specialized medical training to be able to do their job.
Education
A bachelor's degree is the minimum formal education required for these occupations. However, many also require graduate school. For example, they may require a master's degree, and some require a Ph.D., M.D., or J.D. (law degree).
Training
Employees may need some on-the-job training, but most of these occupations assume that the person will already have the required skills, knowledge, work-related experience, and/or training.
Tasks
- Directs activities of workers engaged in cataloging and safekeeping of valuable materials and disposition of worthless materials.
- Prepares document descriptions and reference aids for use of archives, such as accession lists, bibliographies, abstracts, and microfilmed documents.
- Establishes policy guidelines concerning public access and use of materials.
- Requests or recommends pertinent materials available in libraries, private collections, or other archives.
- Advises government agencies, scholars, journalists, and others conducting research by supplying available materials and information.
- Analyzes documents by ascertaining date of writing, author, or original recipient of letter to appraise value to posterity.
- Directs acquisition and physical arrangement of new materials.
- Directs filing and cross-indexing of selected documents in alphabetical and chronological order.
- Selects and edits documents for publication and display, according to knowledge of subject, literary expression, and techniques for presentation and display.
