Description
Compile and post employee time and payroll data. May compute employees' time worked, production, and commission. May compute and post wages and deductions. May prepare paychecks.
Experience
Some previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience may be helpful in these occupations, but usually is not needed. For example, a drywall installer might benefit from experience installing drywall, but an inexperienced person could still learn to be an installer with little difficulty.
Education
These occupations usually require a high school diploma and may require some vocational training or job-related course work. In some cases, an associate's or bachelor's degree could be needed.
Training
Employees in these occupations need anywhere from a few months to one year of working with experienced employees.
Tasks
- Reviews time sheets, work charts, timecards, and union agreements for completeness and to determine payroll factors and pay rates.
- Records employee information, such as exemptions, transfers, leave pay, and insurance coverage, to maintain and update payroll records.
- Verifies attendance, hours worked, and pay adjustments and posts information onto designated records.
- Processes and issues paychecks to employees.
- Compiles and submits payroll status and other reports to designated departments.
- Calculates or computes wages and deductions and enters data into computer.
- Compares wage computations, logs, and time sheets to detect and reconcile payroll discrepancies.
- Compiles employee time, production, and payroll data from time sheets and other records.
