Description
Receive, store, and issue sales floor merchandise. Stock shelves, racks, cases, bins, and tables with merchandise and arrange merchandise displays to attract customers. May periodically take physical count of stock or check and mark merchandise.
Experience
No previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. For example, a person can become a general office clerk even if he/she has never worked in an office before.
Education
These occupations may require a high school diploma or GED certificate. Some may require a formal training course to obtain a license.
Training
Employees in these occupations need anywhere from a few days to a few months of training. Usually, an experienced worker could show you how to do the job.
Tasks
- Receives, opens, and unpacks cartons or crates of merchandise and checks invoice against items received.
- Stamps, attaches, or changes price tags on merchandise, referring to price list.
- Sets up advertising signs and displays merchandise on shelves, counters, or tables to attract customers and promote sales.
- Cuts lumber, screening, glass, and related materials to size requested by customer.
- Cleans display cases, shelves, and aisles.
- Packs customer purchases in bags or cartons.
- Requisitions merchandise from supplier based on available space, merchandise on hand, customer demand, or advertised specials.
- Transports packages to customer vehicle.
- Takes inventory or examines merchandise to identify items to be reordered or replenished.
- Stocks storage areas and displays with new or transferred merchandise.
- Itemizes and totals customer merchandise selection at checkout counter, using cash register, and accepts cash or charge card for purchases.
- Answers questions and advises customer in selection of merchandise.
