Description
Operate machines that: emboss names, addresses, and other matter onto metal plates for use in addressing machines; print names, addresses, and similar information onto items such as envelopes, accounting forms, and advertising literature; address, fold, stuff, seal, and stamp mail; and open envelopes.
Experience
No previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. For example, a person can become a general office clerk even if he/she has never worked in an office before.
Education
These occupations may require a high school diploma or GED certificate. Some may require a formal training course to obtain a license.
Training
Employees in these occupations need anywhere from a few days to a few months of training. Usually, an experienced worker could show you how to do the job.
Tasks
- Starts machine.
- Operates embossing machine or typewriter to make corrections, additions, and changes on address plates.
- Reads production order to determine type and size of items scheduled for printing and mailing.
- Makes adjustments to machine and inspects output for defects.
- Selects type of die size.
- Changes machine ribbon.
- Inserts material for printing or addressing into loading rack on machine.
- Removes printed material from machine, such as labeled articles, postmarked envelopes or tape, and folded sheets.
- Checks ink level, adds ink, and fills paste reservoir.
- Places folded sheets into envelopes preparatory to mailing.
- Adjusts machine guides, rollers, and card insert prior to starting machine.
- Positions plates, stencils, or tapes in machine magazine.
- Observes machine operation to detect evidence of malfunctions during production run.
