Description
Use nets, fishing rods, traps, or other equipment to catch and gather fish or other aquatic animals from rivers, lakes, or oceans, for human consumption or other uses. May haul game onto ship.
Experience
No previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. For example, a person can become a general office clerk even if he/she has never worked in an office before.
Education
These occupations may require a high school diploma or GED certificate. Some may require a formal training course to obtain a license.
Training
Employees in these occupations need anywhere from a few days to a few months of training. Usually, an experienced worker could show you how to do the job.
Tasks
- Hits fish with club or hooks fish with gaff to assist in hauling large fish from water.
- Washes deck, conveyors, knives, and other equipment, using brush, detergent, and water.
- Cultivates and harvests or gathers marine life, such as sponges, abalone, or oysters, from sea bottom, using diving or dredging equipment or barge.
- Connects accessories, such as floats, weights, flags, lights, or markers, to nets, lines, or traps.
- Records date, harvest area, and yield in logbook.
- Removes catch from fishing equipment and uses measuring equipment to ensure compliance with legal size.
- Stands lookout for schools of fish and for steering and engine-room watches.
- Places catch in containers and stows in hold with salt and ice.
- Pulls and guides nets, traps, and lines onto vessel, by hand or using hoisting equipment.
- Puts fishing equipment into water and anchors or tows equipment according to method of fishing.
- Attaches nets, slings, hooks, blades, and lifting devices to cables, booms, hoists, and dredges.
- Steers vessel in fishing area.
- Signals other workers to move, hoist, and position loads.
- Loads and unloads equipment and supplies aboard vessel, by hand or using hoisting equipment.
- Rows boats and dinghies and operates skiffs to transport fishers, divers, and sponge hookers and to tow and position fishing equipment.
- Sorts and cleans marine life and returns undesirable or illegal catch to sea.
- Lubricates, adjusts, and makes minor repairs to engines and fishing equipment.
- Negotiates with buyers for sale of catch.
