Career Details :: Reinforcing Iron and Rebar Workers
Description
Position and secure steel bars or mesh in concrete forms in order to reinforce concrete. Use a variety of fasteners, rod-bending machines, blowtorches, and hand tools.
Experience
Previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required for these occupations. For example, an electrician must have completed three or four years of apprenticeship or several years of vocational training, and often must have passed a licensing exam, in order to perform the job.
Education
Most occupations in this zone require training in vocational schools, related on-the-job experience, or an associate's degree. Some may require a bachelor's degree.
Training

Tasks
- Selects and places rods in forms, spacing and fastening them together, using wire and pliers.
- Determines number, sizes, shapes, and locations of reinforcing rods from blueprints, sketches, or oral instructions.
- Bends steel rods with hand tools and rod-bending machine.
- Reinforces concrete with wire mesh.
- Welds reinforcing bars together, using arch-welding equipment.
- Cuts rods to required lengths, using hacksaw, bar cutters, or acetylene torch.
