Description
Help carpenters by performing duties of lesser skill. Duties include using, supplying, or holding materials or tools, and cleaning work area and equipment.
Experience
No previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. For example, a person can become a general office clerk even if he/she has never worked in an office before.
Education
These occupations may require a high school diploma or GED certificate. Some may require a formal training course to obtain a license.
Training
Employees in these occupations need anywhere from a few days to a few months of training. Usually, an experienced worker could show you how to do the job.
Tasks
- Positions and holds timbers, lumber, and paneling in place for fastening or cutting.
- Selects needed tools, equipment, and materials from storage and transports items to work site.
- Fastens timbers and/or lumber with glue, screws, pegs, or nails.
- Cuts and installs insulating or sound-absorbing material.
- Drills holes in timbers or lumber.
- Erects scaffolding, shoring, and braces.
- Spreads adhesives on flooring to install tile or linoleum.
- Cuts tile or linoleum to fit.
- Holds plumb bobs, sighting rods, and other equipment to aid in establishing reference points and lines.
- Covers surfaces with laminated plastic covering material.
- Hews timbers.
- Cuts timbers, lumber, and/or paneling to specified dimensions.
- Smoothes and sands surfaces to remove ridges, tool marks, glue, or caulking.
- Glues and clamps edges or joints of assembled parts.
