Description
Assemble, install, repair, or maintain electric or hydraulic freight or passenger elevators, escalators, or dumbwaiters.
Experience
A minimum of two to four years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. For example, an accountant must complete four years of college and work for several years in accounting to be considered qualified.
Education
Most of these occupations require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not.
Training
Employees in these occupations usually need several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training.
Tasks
- Studies blueprints to determine layout of framework and foundations.
- Lubricates bearings and other parts to minimize friction.
- Operates elevator to determine power demand and tests power consumption to detect overload factors.
- Inspects wiring connections, control panel hookups, door installation, and alignment and clearance of car hoistway.
- Connects electrical wiring to control panels and electric motors.
- Locates malfunction in brakes, motor, switches, and signal and control systems, using test equipment.
- Adjusts safety controls, counter weights, and mechanism of doors.
- Completes service reports to verify conformance to prescribed standards.
- Installs safety and control devices, cables, drives, rails, motors, and elevator cars.
- Disassembles defective unit and repairs or replaces parts, such as locks, gears, cables, and electric wiring.
- Cuts prefabricated sections of framework, rails, and other components to specified dimensions.
