Description
Repair, maintain, and install computer hardware such as peripheral equipment and word processing systems.
Experience
A minimum of two to four years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. For example, an accountant must complete four years of college and work for several years in accounting to be considered qualified.
Education
Most of these occupations require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not.
Training
Employees in these occupations usually need several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training.
Tasks
- Aligns, adjusts, and calibrates equipment according to specifications.
- Maintains records of repairs, calibrations, and tests.
- Adjusts mechanical parts, using hand tools and soldering iron.
- Converses with equipment operators to ascertain problems with equipment before breakdown or cause of breakdown.
- Calibrates testing instruments.
- Tests faulty equipment and applies knowledge of functional operation of electronic units and systems to diagnose cause of malfunction.
- Replaces defective components and wiring.
- Enters information into computer to copy program from one electronic component to another, or to draw, modify, or store schematics.
- Tests electronic components and circuits to locate defects, using oscilloscopes, signal generators, ammeters, and voltmeters.
