Description
Repair only one system or component on a vehicle, such as brakes, suspension, or radiator.
Experience
Some previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience may be helpful in these occupations, but usually is not needed. For example, a drywall installer might benefit from experience installing drywall, but an inexperienced person could still learn to be an installer with little difficulty.
Education
These occupations usually require a high school diploma and may require some vocational training or job-related course work. In some cases, an associate's or bachelor's degree could be needed.
Training
Employees in these occupations need anywhere from a few months to one year of working with experienced employees.
Tasks
- Inspects and tests new vehicles for damage, records findings, and makes repairs.

- Rebuilds, repairs, and tests automotive injection units.
- Repairs and replaces defective balljoint suspension, brakeshoes, and wheelbearings.
- Repairs and rebuilds clutch systems.
- Removes and replaces defective mufflers and tailpipes from automobiles.
- Inspects, tests, repairs, and replaces automotive cooling systems and fuel tanks.
- Examines vehicle, compiles estimate of repair costs, and secures customer approval to perform repairs.
- Aligns and repairs wheels, axles, frames, torsion bars, and steering mechanisms of automobiles.
- Repairs, replaces, and adjusts defective carburetor parts and gasoline filters.
- Repairs and replaces automobile leaf springs.
- Repairs, overhauls, and adjusts automobile brake systems.
- Installs and repairs automotive air-conditioning units.
- Tunes automobile engines and tests electronic computer components.
- Converts vehicle fuel systems from gasoline to butane gas operations and repairs and services operating butane fuel units.
