Description
Perform work involving the skills of two or more maintenance or craft occupations to keep machines, mechanical equipment, or the structure of an establishment in repair. Duties may involve pipe fitting; boiler making; insulating; welding; machining; carpentry; repairing electrical or mechanical equipment; installing, aligning, and balancing new equipment; and repairing buildings, floors, or stairs.
Experience
Previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required for these occupations. For example, an electrician must have completed three or four years of apprenticeship or several years of vocational training, and often must have passed a licensing exam, in order to perform the job.
Education
Most occupations in this zone require training in vocational schools, related on-the-job experience, or an associate's degree. Some may require a bachelor's degree.
Training
Employees in these occupations usually need one or two years of training involving both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers.
Tasks
- Dismantles and reassembles defective machines and equipment.
- Installs and/or repairs wiring and electrical and electronic components.
- Estimates costs of repairs.
- Records repairs made and costs.
- Inspects and tests machinery and equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions.
- Cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery.
- Installs new or repaired parts.
- Sets up and operates machine tools to repair or fabricate machine parts, jigs and fixtures, and tools.
- Operates cutting torch or welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.
- Lays brick to repair and maintain physical structure of establishment.
- Assembles, installs, and/or repairs pipe systems and hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
- Installs machinery and equipment.
- Assembles, installs, and/or repairs plumbing.
- Paints and repairs woodwork and plaster.
- Fabricates and repairs counters, benches, partitions, and other wooden structures, such as sheds and outbuildings.
