Description
Repair and open locks; make keys; change locks and safe combinations; and install and repair safes.
Experience
Previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required for these occupations. For example, an electrician must have completed three or four years of apprenticeship or several years of vocational training, and often must have passed a licensing exam, in order to perform the job.
Education

Tasks
- Cuts new or duplicate keys, using key-cutting machine.
- Repairs and adjusts safes, vault doors, and vault components, using hand tools, lathes, drill presses, and welding and acetylene cutting apparatus.
- Inserts new or repaired tumblers into lock to change combination.
- Keeps record of company locks and keys.
- Disassembles mechanical or electrical locking devices and repairs or replaces worn tumblers, springs, and other parts, using hand tools.
- Removes interior and exterior finishes on safes and vaults and sprays on new finishes.
- Opens safe locks by drilling.
- Moves picklock in cylinder to open door locks without keys.
- Installs safes, vault doors, and deposit boxes according to blueprints, using equipment such as powered drills, taps, dies, truck crane, and dolly.
