Description
Set up or set up and operate machines to punch, crimp, cut blanks, or notch metal or plastic workpieces between preset dies, according to specifications.
Experience
Some previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience may be helpful in these occupations, but usually is not needed. For example, a drywall installer might benefit from experience installing drywall, but an inexperienced person could still learn to be an installer with little difficulty.
Education
These occupations usually require a high school diploma and may require some vocational training or job-related course work. In some cases, an associate's or bachelor's degree could be needed.
Training
Employees in these occupations need anywhere from a few months to one year of working with experienced employees.
Tasks
- Installs, aligns, and locks specified punches, dies, and cutting blades in ram or bed of machine, using gauges and hand tools.
- Measures workpiece with rule or tape, or traces from template and marks location with scribe, soapstone, or center punch.
- Positions, aligns, and secures workpiece against fixtures or stops on machine bed or on die.
- Cleans and lubricates machines.
- Reads job order to determine location of holes or cutting lines.
- Sets controls or installs gears to synchronize action of feed bar or rollers.
- Sets stops or guides or installs jigs or fixtures for positioning successive workpieces.
- Adjusts ram stroke of press to specified length, using hand tools.
- Activates machine and observes operation to detect misalignment or machine malfunctions.
- Inspects workpieces for conformance to specifications, visually or using gauges or templates, scale, or compass, and adjusts machine to correct errors.
