Description
Set up, operate, or tend paper goods machines that perform a variety of functions, such as converting, sawing, corrugating, banding, wrapping, boxing, stitching, forming, or sealing paper or paperboard sheets into products.
Experience
Some previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience may be helpful in these occupations, but usually is not needed. For example, a drywall installer might benefit from experience installing drywall, but an inexperienced person could still learn to be an installer with little difficulty.
Education
These occupations usually require a high school diploma and may require some vocational training or job-related course work. In some cases, an associate's or bachelor's degree could be needed.
Training
Employees in these occupations need anywhere from a few months to one year of working with experienced employees.
Tasks
- Adjusts guide assembly and folding mechanism according to specifications, using hand tools.
- Starts machine and regulates tension on pressure rolls and synchronizes speed of machine components and temperature of glue or paraffin.
- Places roll of paper or cardboard on machine feed track and threads paper through gluing, coating, and slitting rollers.
- Cuts products to specified dimensions using hand or power cutters.
- Disassembles machines to repair or replace broken or worn parts using hand or power tools.
- Fills glue and paraffin reservoirs and loads automatic stapling mechanism.
- Removes finished cores and stacks or places them on conveyor for transfer to other work areas.
- Measures, spaces, and sets saw blades, cutters, and perforators, according to product specifications.
- Installs attachments to machines for gluing, folding, printing, or cutting.
- Observes operation of various machines to detect machine malfunctions and makes corrections for product to meet specifications.
- Examines completed work to detect defects and verify conformance to work orders.
