Description
Conduct field studies to determine traffic volume, speed, effectiveness of signals, adequacy of lighting, and other factors influencing traffic conditions, under direction of traffic engineer.
Experience
A minimum of two to four years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. For example, an accountant must complete four years of college and work for several years in accounting to be considered qualified.
Education
Most of these occupations require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not.
Training
Employees in these occupations usually need several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training.
Tasks
- Determines average speed of vehicles, using electrical timing devices or radar equipment.
- Computes mathematical factors for adjusting timing of traffic signals, speed restrictions, and related data, using standard formulas.
- Analyzes traffic volume and interviews motorists at intersections or areas where congestion exists or disproportionate number of accidents has occurred.
- Draws graphs, charts, diagrams, and similar aids to illustrate observations and conclusions.
- Prepares drawings of proposed signal installations or other control devices, using drafting instruments.
- Recommends changes in traffic control devices and regulations on basis of findings.
- Observes factors affecting traffic conditions, such as lighting, visibility of signs and pavement markings, traffic signals, and width of street.
- Times stoplight or other delays, using stopwatch.
- Conducts statistical studies of traffic conditions.
