Description
Operate machinery equipped with scoops, shovels, or buckets to excavate and load loose materials.
Experience
Some previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience may be helpful in these occupations, but usually is not needed. For example, a drywall installer might benefit from experience installing drywall, but an inexperienced person could still learn to be an installer with little difficulty.
Education
These occupations usually require a high school diploma and may require some vocational training or job-related course work. In some cases, an associate's or bachelor's degree could be needed.
Training
Employees in these occupations need anywhere from a few months to one year of working with experienced employees.
Tasks
- Observes hand signals, grade stakes, and other markings when operating machines.
- Lubricates and repairs machinery and replaces parts, such as gears, bearings, and bucket teeth.
- Directs ground workers engaged in activities, such as moving stakes or markers.
- Receives written or oral instructions to move or excavate material.
- Measures and verifies levels of rock or gravel, base, and other excavated material.
- Operates power machinery, such as powered shovel, stripping shovel, scraper loader (mucking machine), or back hoe (trench-excavating machine) to excavate and load material.
