Description
Operate steam or internal combustion engines to transmit, compress, or recover gases, such as butane, nitrogen, hydrogen, and natural gas, in various production processes.
Experience
A minimum of two to four years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. For example, an accountant must complete four years of college and work for several years in accounting to be considered qualified.
Education
Most of these occupations require a four-year bachelor's degree, but some do not.
Training
Employees in these occupations usually need several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training.
Tasks
- Performs minor repairs on equipment, using hand tools.
- Moves controls and turns valves to start compressor engines, pumps, and auxiliary equipment.
- Conducts chemical tests to evaluate quality of gas.
- Observes operation of equipment to detect malfunctions.
- Monitors meters, gauges, and recording instrument charts to ensure specified temperature, pressure, and flow of gas through system.
- Operates or tends equipment to purify gases.
- Records instrument readings and operational changes in operating log.
- Operates equipment to control transmission of natural gas through pipelines.
