CAMPUS SUMMARY
Shimer College is one of a handful of colleges devoted principally to reading and discussing the Great Books. Its Core Curriculum, originally designed by Robert Maynard Hutchins, former Chancellor/President of the University of Chicago, has since been modified and updated to keep pace with advances in the broadly defined fields of the Humanities, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences.

Shimer's integrated curriculum is presented through the reading of original source materials, not textbooks that attempt to explain them. Students and faculty meet together in small, discussion-format classes of no more than 12 to explore, question and discuss the readings. Shimer faculty act as guides, provoking questions, suggesting various approaches to the material, and facilitating discussion.

Shimer was founded in 1853 in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Today, the College is located in Chicago, Illinois, on a campus it shares with the Illinois Institute of Technology and Vandercook College of Music. Shimer students enjoy access to a safe, diverse campus environment with excellent student services--and unlimited access to various trains and buses which allow for a easy and quick commute to the greater learning environment that is Chicago.

Shimer's student body is small, presently around 112; the college plans to grow eventually to a maximum enrollment of 300 students. The current student to faculty ratio is approximately 8 to 1.

Shimer's mission today remains grounded in its founders' vision: to produce life-long learners with well-developed skills of clear expression, analytical reasoning, and logical presentation.

UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Even among the small number of "Great Books" colleges, Shimer is different, in that Shimer offers upper-division students the opportunity to select an area of concentration in the Humanities, Natural Sciences or Social Sciences. Moreover, in addition to classic works of the Western intellectual tradition included in the "Core," Shimer students may pursue electives that include classics of non-Western traditions and works considered fundamental to areas of contemporary academic discourse. Shimer students may also propose tutorials in areas of their interest.

Shimer makes its core curriculum available to traditional college students through its weekday program, to adult students through its Every-Third-Weekend program, and to gifted high school students through the early-entrant and concurrent enrollment programs.

Shimer offers the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Humanities, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences and the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Students.

Shimer is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
