Inspiring students by ensuring that geographic access never hinders education, Mercy has 13 different locations throughout Westchester and New York City, offering a wide range of courses, and allowing students to attend classes at their convenience. Mercy College serves over 10,000 students throughout the New York metropolitan area. Locations include campuses in Dobbs Ferry, the Bronx, Yorktown, White Plains and Manhattan, and extension centers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Yonkers, as well as Merlin, its on-line campus, which offers over 140 courses on-line and eight degrees completely over the Internet.
Programs and Degrees Mercy’s extensive baccalaureate programs range from Accounting to Veterinary Technology, including pre-professional preparation, offering more than 90 majors. Also available are cooperative education, the honors program, Spanish and Korean bilingual programs, and English as a second language. The EDGE Program and Corporate Communications are two accelerated degree programs where students can earn up to 60 credits in course work and life experience in one year. The five-year BS/MS programs in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, and Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine, are offered at Mercy as well as master’s degree programs in Family Health Nursing, and Adult Nurse Practitioner, Communication Disorders, from among 12 health science programs. Mercy offers graduate programs in all levels of teacher education, learning technology, bilingual education, reading, special education, school administration and supervision, school business administration, and TESOL. Graduate business programs include Banking, Human Resource Management, Organizational Leadership, Internet Business Systems, and Direct Marketing. Psychology, Family and School Counseling, Health Services Management, and English Literature are also offered at the graduate level.
Student Life Founded in 1950 by the Sisters of Mercy, the College became an independent, nonsectarian, co-educational institution in 1969. The 60-acre Dobbs Ferry campus is located along the Hudson River. A recording studio and midi labs are housed in the White Plains campus as well as the new Center for Digital Arts that opened this fall. The Center for Digital Arts is home to the new Computer Arts and Technology program which is the first bachelor of fine arts be offered by the college. The Bronx Campus offers special courses and programs for students interested in a teaching career, including special educational grants and contacts unique to the Bronx Campus community. At present, complete majors are available in Accounting, Behavioral Science, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, English, History, Psychology, and Sociology at the Yorktown Campus. Mercy has just signed a lease for a new Manhattan Campus site at 1328 Broadway (2 Herald Square). The anticipated opening date is Fall 2002.
Mercy On-Line Mercy College’s Virtual Campus, MerLIN features counseling, student services, and activities over the Internet. It also enables students to take over 140 courses, earn eight degrees and register via Mercy’s web page www.mercy.edu. Mercy’s newest endeavor is Campus Pipeline, a new web-based intranet that provides students, staff, and faculty with better access to service and campus information. Students can personalize their website called My Pipeline, access their grades, and use the Pipeline as a direct link to their classes.
Strength from Diversity With 7,500 undergraduate and almost 2,500 graduate students, Mercy is one of the largest and most dynamic institutes of higher learning in New York. Mercy derives much of its strength from the diversity of its student body, which is 33% Hispanic, 30 % African-American and 3% Asian American. Foreign students from more than 100 nations add to the cultural richness of the school. The college’s close proximity to New York City gives students the opportunity to experience a vast array of cultural and educational events. In addition, Mercy College interns receive high-caliber on-the-job experience at such prominent organizations as the New York Stock Exchange, MCI, Consumer Reports and ABC News.
