CAMPUS SUMMARY
Hartwick's purpose as a liberal arts & sciences college is to educate people who will thrive in and contribute to the world of the future; people who are prepared to meet the personal, intellectual, and social challenges of a rapidly changing and increasingly interdependent world. Founded in 1797, as Hartwick Seminary through the will of John Christopher Hartwick, a Lutheran minister who led several mission of early settlers in the Mohawk and Hudson River valleys. Incorporated in 1816 as a classical academy and theological institution, the school became co-educational in 1851. Officially chartered in 1928 as a full, four-year college.

The Hartwick campus is located in the northwestern foothills of the Catskill Mountains in the college town of Oneonta. The campus is 425 acres with 30 buildings. Outstanding resources, like the 914-acre Pine Lake Environmental Campus, make Hartwick College a tremendous living and learning environment. You'll work hard, but when you pack up your books and notebook PC, you'll find friends who like to kick back and have fun. With more than 50 student organizations, 24 intercolligiate atheletic teams, community service activities, and much to do in town and in the region, there's something for everyone.

UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Hartwick is a future-directed college, focusing on preparing you for your future. Our academic programs and our initiatives attest to this. There is a real connection between education and life after college. The curriculum is designed to give you practical as well as theoretical knowledge and we employ innovative teaching techniques that make learning both engaging and fun. We provide a rich program of off-campus experiences all around the world (even for first-year students!) and internships in a wide range of career areas that allow you to add real-world, interactive experience to your coursework. Classes are small; you’ll have opportunities to pursue individual research projects and work closely with professors. Every student receives a notebook PC, printer, network connection, Internet access, telephone/voice-mail and video service. More than 70% of students spend time off-campus studying or pursuing internships. Our career preparation program is so successful that our trustees have guaranteed students who meet certain criteria that if you don’t have an entry-level job or graduate school acceptance within six months of graduation, you will be provided with a paid internship in your chosen field.

Our new Science Center offers research laboratories for student-faculty research, a Science Communications Center, nursing laboratory, biotechnology lab, and greenhouse, herbarium, electron microscope, and tissue culture lab. The $12 million facility encourages cross-disciplinary study and research. The Pine Lake Environmental Campus offers cabin and lodge housing for students and a field station for student-faculty research.
