CAMPUS SUMMARY
The Health Science Center is located in the heart of Brooklyn, the largest of the five boroughs of New York City with a population of almost 2.3 million. Brooklyn is the sixth-largest county in the United States and equivalent by population to the fourth-largest city. The center is dedicated to serving the health care needs of this community in a caring, compassionate fashion.

The College of Medicine traces its origin back to 1860 as the Long Island College Hospital School of Medicine. The school revolutionized medical education in the United States by rejecting the practice of training physicians exclusively in university classrooms and bringing the teaching of medicine to the hospital bedside for the first time. In 1950 the school joined the State University of New York and became known as Downstate Medical Center. The College of Health Related Professions, the College of Nursing and the School of Graduate Studies were established at Downstate in 1966. In 1986 the medical center officially changed its name to SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn to reflect its educational and patient care mission.

Today, the Health Science Center includes the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Health Related Professions, and the School of Graduate Studies with a total enrollment of more than 1,400 students. The College of Medicine has many distinguished alumni. In 1997, it ranked 7th nationally in the number of alumni who hold faculty positions in medical schools. Of particular pride, on October 12, 1998, Dr. Robert Furchgott, distinguished professor emeritus and chairman of Downstate’s Department of Pharmacology from 1956 to 1982, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine with two other recipients for his research into nitric oxide, which revolutionized our understanding of vascular physiology.
