CAMPUS SUMMARY
In the forty-four years since its founding, Stony Brook University has grown tremendously and is now recognized as one of the nation’s leading centers of learning and scholarship – fulfilling the mandate given by the State Board of Regents in 1960 to become a university that would “stand with the finest in the country.” Ranked among the top public research universities in the United States as shown in a recent study published by Johns Hopkins University Press, Stony Brook joins the ranks of such institutions as Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, and Stanford as the newest member of the Association of American Universities, the prestigious organization of research universities whose membership includes only 63 universities nationwide. Classified a Research I University by the Carnegie Foundation – a distinction awarded to fewer than 2% of all colleges and universities in the country – Stony Brook is among the top 25 institutions funded by the National Science Foundation.

Located at the geographic midpoint of Long Island, the University campus lies about 60 miles east of New York City and 60 miles west of Montauk Point, convenient both to Manhattan’s urban vitality and the tranquil countryside and beautiful seashore of eastern Suffolk. Situated on 1,100 wooded acres, Stony Brook offers students not only outstanding academic opportunities, but surroundings rich in natural beauty and all the excitement of a major university center, including NCAA Division I athletic events and superb performances by artists of international stature. These academic and cultural resources of the university provide a superb environment for intellectual and personal growth.

Stony Brook has exceptional strength in the sciences, mathematics, humanities, fine arts, social sciences, engineering, and health professions, with the university as a whole and many of its programs individually ranked among the top fifty nationwide (The Gourman Report, 10th edition). The strength of Stony Brook’s academic programs and the reputation of our distinguished faculty attract students from around the corner and around the world. Stony Brook enrolls 19,831 full- and part-time students, including 13,257 undergraduates, hailing from all 50 states and 80 foreign countries.

UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Stony Brook is a pioneer in developing and applying the concept of the learning community to enrich undergraduate education at a major research university, providing students with the camaraderie of a small college environment along with all the advantages of a major research university. Stony Brook’s learning communities include: University Learning Communities for students who are interested in premedical studies, humanities and social sciences, computer science, or electrical engineering; Living/Learning Centers, where students with common interests live and learn together; Women in Science and Engineering for women interested in mathematics, science, and engineering; Federated Learning Communities, where students study a subject from the perspective of multiple disciplines with the benefit of a faculty “master learner”; and The Honors College and University Scholars, for high achieving students.

Quickly becoming a national model for undergraduate education at a research university, Stony Brook was recently selected by the National Science Foundation as one of only ten universities in the nation to receive special recognition for this based on educational vision, a significant record of accomplishments, and leadership in the field of higher education. Opportunities for undergraduates to collaborate with faculty in research projects and creative activities abound. Students are encouraged to become involved in hands-on, discovery-based learning through innovative research-oriented courses and through independent projects carried out under the supervision of faculty.
