Am I eligible?

Penn State-sponsored programs are open to all regularly enrolled Penn State undergraduate students. Typically, students are juniors or seniors while studying abroad. Students must be in good academic standing when they apply, and must show evidence of maturity, stability, self-discipline, and strong academic motivation. Students must complete all prerequisites for their chosen program before going abroad.

Will study abroad work with my major?

With careful planning, students in any major or college at Penn State can fit an international program into their curriculum, and still maintain regular progress towards graduation. Students must work with their departmental academic adviser to determine how courses taken abroad will fit into their degree audit.

Will I receive Penn State credit for courses I take abroad?

One of the benefits of studying on a Penn State-sponsored program is that you remain registered at the University while you are abroad. Once your overseas classes have been accredited, they will be assigned Penn State course numbers. The grades that you earn abroad will be reflected in your GPA.

How much will an international program cost?

Students participating in Penn State-sponsored programs pay regular Penn State tuition. Room and board costs vary from program to program. The International Education Programs and Studies office has cost estimate sheets that detail the cost of attendance for each program for one semester.

How can I afford it?

For many programs, costs are comparable to what you spend at Penn State. In most cases, you will also be able to apply your regular financial aid to the cost of the program. Information on a variety of scholarships and grants specifically for overseas study may be obtained through the International Education Programs and Studies office.

Restrictions on CEEB Advanced Placement options:
The amount of credit awarded for Advanced Placement Examination (AP Exam) varies with an earned grade of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP Exam.

An official grade report should be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to the Undergraduate Admissions Office at the University Park campus: 201 Shields Building, University Park, PA 16802-1294. If credit is awarded, your university record will carry a notation of credit, but no grade will be recorded. Credit acquired in this manner does not affect your grade point average at Penn State.
Limitations of credit earned through Advanced Placement Examinations are as follows:
(a) the credit must be useful in your program of study;
(b) duplicate credit in the same subject is not awarded in any case; and
(c) credit may only be awarded if you are a degree candidate at Penn State.

NOTE: No credit is given for the following AP Exams:

1. English - Language and Composition
2. Music - Listening and Literature

Credit by Examination:

Credits may be earned through successful completion of comprehensive examinations. A grade of "C" or higher must be earned in the examination for credit to be awarded. A fee for each credit will be charged.

Credit by Validation:

Credit for courses completed at other institutions and graded the equivalent of an "A,A-,B+,B-,C+, or C" at Penn State may be obtained through credit by validation when the Undergraduate Admissions Office is unable to determine the transferability of a course through other means. A credit by validation form and supporting documentation must be submitted to the Undergraduate Admissions Office at University Park: 201 Shields Building, University Park, PA 16802-1294. The Undergraduate Admissions Office will forward this information to a representative of the academic department in which an equivalent course is taught at Penn State.

Credit by Portfolio Assessment:

If you are interested in receiving credit for college-level learning obtained in noncollegiate settings, you may develop a portfolio that reflects knowledge mastered, request assessment of your portfolio, and be awarded credit. The following guidelines apply:
1. Credit is granted for college-level learning obtained during work or other experience.

2. Credit without grades is awarded only if you are currently enrolled.

3. Credit is awarded only at the undergraduate level.

4. Credit cannot duplicate other coursework that you have already completed.

5. An individual or team of faculty members will make the determination whether credit will be awarded based on the portfolio.

6. Credit earned via portfolio will appear on your grade transcript as transfer credits.
