The Brown Library is home to an impressive collection of environmental books and periodicals, including full-text online periodical databases and numerous electronic resources including JSTOR, DOAJ, EBSCO Academic Search Premier, AGRICLOA, Science Direct, and ERIC.
The Northern Studies Library, located at Sterling College¿s Center for Northern Studies, houses an extensive and cross-disciplinary collection of scholarly books and current and archived journals devoted principally to the study of the cultures and environment of the Circumpolar North. This library is also home to a premier collection of rare and first editions of Arctic and Antarctic exploration literature.
The library also houses one of Sterling¿s four computer centers and offers students a comfortable and inviting place to read and study 24 hours a day. Throughout the year the Brown Library Gallery also hosts a variety of art exhibits, showing the work of prominent regional and local artists.

The Career Resource Center offers 24/7 access to a 3,000 record internship database, graduate school information, field course information, international program information, permanent and seasonal job opportunities, and career books and directories¿all with an environmental focus supporting student interests and majors. The Career Resource Center supports students and alumni as they make life-long career decisions and pursue meaningful work, while promoting environmentally and socially responsible careers.
The Sterling College Farm offers two wind and solar-powered barns, pastureland, an acre of certified organic vegetable and herb gardens, a glass greenhouse, a movable hoop house, and fruit trees. The McCarthy Barns house a diverse animal population including cattle, sheep, poultry, pigs, goats, and draft horses.
The Logging Shop, home to Sterling's fine chainsaw and two-person crosscut saw collection, is primarily used for classes, trail building projects, and service-learning.
A comprehensive woodworking shop with power and hand-tools is available, primarily for classes such as A Reverence for Wood and Forgotten Arts.
Simpson Hall contains several classrooms, a science lab, the Environmental Science Computer Lab, the Counseling Center, the Dean of Students Office, a darkroom, a Bouldering Wall, a fitness room, and the garden shed.
The climbing wall on the lower campus is 30 feet tall and features three south facing interior surfaces for climbing, including an overhang. There is also a chimney climb on the back. A roof allows us to climb during inclement weather; special lighting also allows us to climb in the evenings. The climbing wall is also tied into the high elements of the Sterling College Challenge Course.
The Sterling College campus includes 75 acres of woodlot, with lean-tos and tent platforms, linked by a series of trails available for student use. Beyond the McCarthy Barns is the Sterling Nature Trail, a series of four trails that can be followed using an interpretive guide created by Sterling students. Cross-country ski trails, maintained in the winter by the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, also run through Sterling's woodlot.
The mission of Sterling¿s Food Service is to manage the food system as an integral part of our educational programs by demonstrating a living-what-we-teach philosophy. Aligning with this mission, we support the partnerships between chefs and Vermont farmers through our membership with the Vermont Fresh Network.
The following goals fulfill the kitchen¿s mission:
Develop a menu that makes best use of Sterling-grown, organic, and local foods when available.
Serve healthful, nutritious foods that are pleasing to diners and provide a comfortable dining environment.
Choose, prepare, and serve food in an environmentally conscientious manner. Compost all food and kitchen waste.
Educate students and other community members about the effects of their food choices on the environment and nutrition.
The Center for Northern Studies supports students majoring in Circumpolar Studies at Sterling College. The Center is located in Wolcott, Vermont, a short 15 minute drive from the College. Our northern New England location is actually a few miles nearer the equator than to the North Pole; however, this setting just under the Canadian border is subject to a climate that is far colder, during both summer and winter, than is normal for these latitudes. The Center site provides a natural subarctic laboratory on the periphery of an exceptional 300-acre example of boreal forest and muskeg in northern New England.
