Hunter College is committed to the achievement of a pluralistic community; it offers a curriculum designed to meet the highest academic standards while fostering understanding among individuals from different racial, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. The goal of a Hunter College education is to encourage the fullest possible intellectual and personal growth in each student. Originally called Normal College, the school was founded in 1870 by Thomas Hunter to education young women who wished to be teachers. Today Hunter is a coeducational, fully accredited college with a large distinguished faculty in the Liberal Arts and Science and several professional schools.


UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Hunter students study at the center of the most magnificent cities in the world. Within easy walking distance are many of the world’s finest museums, libraries, concert halls, cultural centers and theaters. The college comprises five sites in Manhattan. The largest, at East 68th Street and Lexington Avenue, is a modern complex of buildings interconnected by skywalks. Programs in the arts and sciences as well as in teacher education are taught here. The Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, one of the nation’s largest nursing programs, and the School of Health Sciences, noted for its outstanding programs, are located at the Brookdale Campus on East 25th Street. The Hunter College School of Social Work, recently listed among the top ten schools of its kind in the nation, is located on East 79th Street on Manhattan’s west side, Hunter’s MFA building houses an 8,000-square-foot gallery and provides our MFA students with 2 individual studios that are among the best in the city.
