| CAMPUS SUMMARY |
 |
Sarah Lawrence College is a private, coeducational liberal arts college internationally known for its innovative educational philosophy and individualized curriculum. Located in Westchester County, Sarah Lawrence is just 30 minutes north of and easily accessible to the rich cultural resources of New York City. The picturesque 40-acre wooded campus blends traditional English architecture and state-of-the-art facilities. Over ninety percent of Sarah Lawrence students live on campus. There is a wide choice of housing options on the college’s secure, residential campus, from small Tudor houses to contemporary dormitories.
The college was founded in 1926 by William Van Duzer to honor his wife, Sarah Lawrence. Throughout its history, Sarah Lawrence has promoted new educational ideas and emphasized independent, interdisciplinary study that students pursue in biweekly, one-on-one conferences with professors. |

| UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS |
 |
For students who desire independent learning, small classes and close interaction with professors, Sarah Lawrence College is ideal.
A structure of small seminars (maximum fifteen students) and individual conferences, modeled on the Oxford tutorial system, is the cornerstone of the Sarah Lawrence academic experience. All students at Sarah Lawrence, in consultation with a primary academic advisor known as a "don" and other members of the faculty, design their own course of study rather than declaring formal majors. In order to accommodate this individual education plan, the student to faculty ratio at Sarah Lawrence is the lowest in the country at 6:1.
Popular areas of study include literature, theater, psychology, creative writing, pre-med, visual arts and history. Internships, arranged through our Career Counseling Center, are available in any field and often take place in nearby New York City. Within five years of graduation, fully seventy percent of Sarah Lawrence students attend graduate or professional school. Notable alumnae/i of the college include writer Alice Walker, actor and former chair of the NEA Jane Alexander, journalist Barbara Walters, filmmaker Brian DePalma, and dancer Meredith Monk. |
