CAMPUS SUMMARY
Overlooking the city of Troy and the historic Hudson River, Rensselaer’s 260-acre campus blends a cluster of classic-style, ivy-covered brick buildings dating from the turn of the century with more recently constructed facilities such as the Center for Industrial Innovation. A program of extensive renovation has equipped the campus with ultra-modern teaching facilities while preserving the traditional elegance of its historic buildings. Rensselaer retains the quiet and natural beauty of a park-like setting while offering many conveniences of a city campus. Rensselaer is located in the heart of New York’s Capital District. The region – which includes the cities of Albany, Schenectady, and Troy and their suburbs – has a combined population of approximately 870,000 and is an important business, government, industrial and academic hub. Students enjoy easy access to Boston (3 hours), New York City (2.5 hours) and Montreal (4 hours). The Adirondacks, the Berkshire, and the Catskills, all within an hour of Troy, offer hundreds of areas for camping, hiking, and skiing.

UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Rensselaer leads the nation in educational reform with its award-winning studio-based “interactive” approach to teaching. Although there are still lectures, more and more classes involve lively discussion, team problem-solving, and faculty mentoring. In the past two years, faculty have also renewed the curriculum, replacing the traditional five or six 3-credit-course model with a “4x4” curriculum of four 4-credit-hour courses. All first-year students are required to have a laptop computer that meets Rensselaer’s specifications. Mobile computing both in and out of class gives students unparalleled access to the faculty, each other, the university’s extensive information systems, and the web from almost anywhere on campus. One of the hallmarks of a Rensselaer education is the opportunity for close intellectual partnership between students and faculty. Students are strongly encouraged to learn outside the classroom by participating in independent projects, faculty research, study abroad, and cooperative education. The Undergraduate Research Program offers hands-on experience in hundreds of areas. Co-op assignments give students the opportunity to add practical experience to their academic study. Air Force, Army, and Naval/Marine ROTC programs are available on an elective basis.
