CAMPUS SUMMARY
Founded as the Pittsburgh Academy in 1787 and private through much of its history, Pitt became a state-related university in 1966. Today, the University of Pittsburgh system consists of its 132-acre main campus, located in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, with regional campuses in Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown, and Titusville. Its 9,600 employees, including 3,800 faculty members, serve more than 32,000 students through the programs of 18 undergraduate, graduate and professional schools.

The campus' close proximity to downtown Pittsburgh is one of Pitt's advantages, providing an abundance of opportunities for internships and residencies for students. Major sports events (Pittsburgh is home to the Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins) and arts and entertainment venues are all nearby.

UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
The University of Pittsburgh has gained international recognition for the quality of its programs in disciplines as diverse as philosophy and transplantation surgery. It is a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization comprised of the top sixty research universities in North America. The University is home to 15 major research centers. In recent annual listings, Pitt has ranked among America's top twenty universities, both in National Science Foundation funding for science and engineering development and in overall support from private philanthropic foundations. Its historic strength in medicine is reflected in such achievements as the development of the Salk polio vaccine. Today, Pitt is home to the world's most active organ transplant program and ranks among the top ten universities nationally in terms of annual research support awarded by the National Institutes of Health.
