The School of Arts and Sciences offers three freshman programs. Freshman Studies is a one-credit academic orientation course which initiates mentoring relationships; introduces students to the University's extensive library system, academic support services, and academic integrity guidelines; and explores how education relates to mapping out life goals. The Freshman Writing Seminar is integrated with the Freshman Studies course to create a four-credit course that meets the Arts and Sciences composition requirement, with many themes from which to choose. The Arts and Sciences Learning Communities provide an integrated learning experience by offering blocks of classes with the same group of 18 students. Each thematic block includes the Freshman Studies course and other courses that fulfill general education requirements. Learning Communities offer the most structure to ensure peer interaction, faculty-student interaction, and a theme that provides a strong context for learning.
Living Learning Communities are offered in the residence halls to students with special interests. The following are available: the College of Business Administration Living Learning Community (CBA-LLC), the Students Preparing for Academics and Careers in Engineering Living Learning Community (SPACE), the Undergraduate Nurses in Training Living Learning Community (UNIT-LLC), the International Living Learning Community, and for students participating in the University Honors College, the Honors Living Learning Communities. |
