| CAMPUS SUMMARY |
 |
In 1889, the citizens of the borough of Slippery Rock founded the college and gave it the town's picturesque name. In 1983, Slippery Rock State Teachers College became Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. The academic divisions of the University are the College of Education, College of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts, College of Business, Information, and Behavior Sciences, College of Health, Environment, and Science, and Graduate Studies and Research. While most of the University's 7,000 students are Pennsylvania residents, approximately 5 percent are from other states and about 3 percent are international students from more than 70 countries.
Located in western Pennsylvania, the University is easily accessible. Two major interstate highways, I-79 and I-80, intersect within 7 miles of the University. Pittsburgh, one of the country's largest cities and a setting for major cultural and sporting events, is less than an hour's drive south. Erie, Pennsylvania is located 75 miles north, and Youngstown, Ohio is just 35 miles west. The university is located in a town of about 3,000 that is in the middle of a population center of about 120,000. |
