CAMPUS SUMMARY
In 1889, the citizens of the borough of Slippery Rock founded the college and gave it the town's picturesque name. In 1983, Slippery Rock State Teachers College became Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. The academic divisions of the University are the College of Education, College of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts, College of Business, Information, and Behavior Sciences, College of Health, Environment, and Science, and Graduate Studies and Research. While most of the University's 7,000 students are Pennsylvania residents, approximately 5 percent are from other states and about 3 percent are international students from more than 70 countries.

Located in western Pennsylvania, the University is easily accessible. Two major interstate highways, I-79 and I-80, intersect within 7 miles of the University. Pittsburgh, one of the country's largest cities and a setting for major cultural and sporting events, is less than an hour's drive south. Erie, Pennsylvania is located 75 miles north, and Youngstown, Ohio is just 35 miles west. The university is located in a town of about 3,000 that is in the middle of a population center of about 120,000.

UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Slippery Rock University, one of the 14 state-owned institutions that comprise the State System of Higher Education of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, has a long tradition of providing quality education to students. Started in 1889 as a teacher education institution, it has developed into a mult-purpose institution with over 60 degree programs in the College of Education, College of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts, College of Business, Information, and Behavioral Sciences, College of Health, Environment, and Science, and Graduate Studies and Research.

Besides on-campus instructional experiences, students use learning facilities at nearby Moraine State Park, Jennings Environmental Center, McKeever Environmental Learning Center, Waterfront Corporate Park in the North Hills of Pittsburgh, as well as Wallops Island Marine Science Laboratory in Virginia. Most academic departments also sponsor internship programs, practica, and student teaching opportunities that provide on-the-job educational and professional training domestically or in any of 19 foreign countries.
